This Is A Call
New Zealand Cassette Single
Let’s talk about the first single by the Foo Fighters. The song that started it all, and got me hooked on the Foo Fighters for good. This Is A Call. The first real single that was released from the first, self titled album, Foo Fighters.
This single was released in quite a number of formats. It was released on the 19th of June, 1995. In those days, singles were still released on almost all known formats. This particular single was released on Cassette, CD and Vinyl. In this story I will focus on just one of them, and that is one of the cassette singles. Most notably, the one from New Zealand. There is also a Australian release, which is actually a bit more rare than this one, but I don’t have that in my collection yet, and so I won’t write about it.
I chose to focus on one of the cassette releases, because cassette singles (or cassingles if you will) would soon become extinct, and therefore very collectible. As CD singles are slowly dying now, so were cassette singles back then.
I finally obtained this cassette a couple of years ago. I was looking for it for a long time, so it’s great to have it in my possesion now.
The song also takes me back to where my love for the Foo Fighters started. I bought the standard EU cd single, the day before I went on my first holiday with my friends. No parents to look over us, and just listening to great music, drinking beer and having a smoke. I was 16 years old, and just wanted to have fun, with a great soundtrack to have fun to. Ahhh, those were the days...
