I’m in the sky tonight...

Next Year

EU Cassette Single

A while ago I discussed the This Is A Call cassette single. This time I would like to talk about another cassette single (or cassingle if you will). Namely the Next Year cassette single. This one is considered to be (at least to my notion) the last of the official cassette single releases by the Foo Fighters. It was produced in very small numbers, because the market for these cassette singles was very thin at the time. No one was buying these anymore, because let’s face it, who still used a cassette player in the year 2000?
That’s also exactly the reason why it’s so collectible these days. Not many were made, and not so many were actually sold at the time. To my knowledge I am one of the few Foo collectors who owns one of them.
The B-side to this single is a cool one. It’s a version of Big Me, recorded live for the 2 Meter Sessions in The Netherlands. Since I hail from the Netherlands, I know the 2 Meter Sessions very well. It’s a great show that has been on the air (radio and tv) since 1987. A lot of great bands and artists contributed through the years. The session the Foo Fighters did was a memorable one. The whole setlist they did was:
Ain’t it the life
Floaty
Big Me
Next Year
Everlong
Learn To Fly
A little insight in this historic recording can be found under the link. Beware, most of the speech is in Dutch, but there is some great footage of the foos there. Check it out.
But back to the release itself. It's not only cool to me because this one is friggin’ rare. It’s also a true piece of recording history, since it was the last cassette single made. If you own one, hold it tight, because this will only increase in value. Moneysworth and sentimental.
Here’s some release info.
